There are five types of shops: weapon, armor, White Magic, Black Magic, and item. Shops are available in each town. In the Whisperwind Cove, a village of mages exists, where magic of all levels and magic-related equipment is sold.
Weapon, armor, item, and magic shops return. Unlike the previous games, not every town has at least one of these, such as in Saronia or Doga's Manor. Doga's Village has magic shops that sell all kinds of magic, except for level 8 spells, which can only be purchased at Eureka. In this same area exists a shop that sells both armor and weapons.
Magic shops do not appear, and while armor and weapon shops can share the same building, item shops are always distinct. A new type of shop is introduced, the auction house, only found at Jidoor. The Narshe weapon shop in the World of Ruin, if opened with Locke Cole, holds a secret where the player is able to get either the Ragnarok weapon or the Ragnarok magicite.
The shops are of different style to the shops in previous installments. While there are general shops that sell all kinds of items, there is no distinction between armor and weapon shops, and the Materia shops serve as the magic shops. Shops that sell only accessories also exist.
The Sector 7 Slums shops become unavailable early on, which makes certain early armor become unavailable if the player didn't buy them. In Junon the shops' inventory updates on disc 2, all but for the Materia shop. Game data suggests the Materia shop's inventory was intended to update as well, and it not doing so is a glitch. This is notable as it would have sold the Magic Plus Materia that isn't available from any shop in the retail version.
Every town and city in Vana'diel has at least one non-player character selling weapons, armor, items, and magic scrolls. The big cities (except Jeuno) also host the headquarters of crafting guilds and their guild shops can be found in their cities. Guild shops, unlike regular shops, have opening and closing hours and have a holiday on a specific day each week. Despite the existence of NPC merchants, players generally trade with each other through the use of auction house since they can get a better price and most of the best items are not sold by NPC merchants.
In the major towns of Ivalice, shops are divided into magick, weapons, armor, gambits, technicks, and items and in minor areas there are usually merchants selling base provisions. Many of the more remote shops update their stock late in the game to sell special magick and equipment not available from any other shop. Necrohol of Nabudis has a hidden shop the player can find by inspecting a corner of a room in an area off the map. The Clan Centurio shop in Muthru Bazaar in Rabanastre sells items based on the player's rank in the clan.
Shops can only be found in the Town. There is an Equipment shop and a Crafting shop, although there is no shop that sells Magicite nor Consumables, since magicite is obtained in the beginning of the game and infinite, while items are found in the field. 2ff7e9595c
